Welcome to the website of the Transition Year Programme
The Transition Year Programme is a unique one year programme that promotes the personal, social, vocational and educational development of students and prepares them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society (Transition Year Guidelines, 1994, Department of Education). TY provides a bridge to enable students to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with Junior Cycle to the more independent learning environment associated with Senior Cycle. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.

Calling all adventurous TY students!

RTÉ Young Peoples Programmes, along with Yellow Asylum Films, are looking for people to participate in a forthcoming television series which will follow eight Transition Year students – four able-bodied and four with disabilities – on a life-changing and fun journey to an exotic mystery location.
Throughout, they will undertake a number of exciting challenges. They will be trained and fully supervised by a team of experts but they will still need a strong sense of adventure and commitment.
The only qualifications are that you must have an open mind and a desire to test your limits. You’ll also have to be in Transition Year in your school, sixteen years of age or older on January 1st, 2013, have a valid passport and be free, ready and willing to travel at some stage during the Spring of 2013 to a place most people have never even thought of visiting.
Those interested need to upload a five-minute video to: www.rte.ie/trte/inyourshoes making the case for why they should to be chosen as one of the lucky eight.

Enabling Access Across Generations - a new NDA certified Disability Awareness E-learning Module
TY coordinators planning for this year might be interested in a new Module devised by the Local Authorities Access Officers Network. This module of learning aims to promote the personal, social and educational development of TY students by placing specific emphasis on students’ own responsibility in learning, group work, activity based learning and preparation for work experiences.
TY students will complete the NDA certified Disability Awareness E-learning Module, offering them the opportunity to maximise the use of computer technology in a way which may not always be possible in examination courses. Additionally, this initiative presents as an opportunity for TY students to engage in an interdisciplinary approach to learning with the social and economic aspects of disability, equality and diversity to the fore in an award competition. Both elements are designed to complement mainstream Transition Year learning units and support the flexibility afforded in curriculum design. This learning module is flexible in it application can be adapted to fit in within any of the four layers of the Transition Year Programme.

Circle of Life Transition Year Assignment
This national project centres around the altruistic and socially enriching cause of organ donation, but has at its core, a very specific objective; the involvement of young people, through the TY Programme, in the creation of a national garden of commemoration to organ donors, to be located in Salthill, Galway. While this project would have many national and local beneficiaries including the promotion of the life saving cause of organ donation, it could be of considerable educational/cultural and societal benefit to the students and schools involved. The project is being presented and organized by Strange Boat Donor Foundation who would very much welcome the views and response of TY Coordinators. Visit www.strangeboat.org or download details here
